Celebrity School Spotlight: Amy Poehler

Amy Poehler named third runner-up for “Most Casual” at Burlington High School.

Comedian Amy Poehler is the voice of “Joy” in Pixar’s hit film Inside Out. But before her days on SNL and Parks and Recreation, teenage Poehler was just another Red Devil at Burlington High School in Burlington, Massachusetts.

Poehler wrote about her alma mater in her book Yes, Please, “I weaved in and out of activities and groups, and hid on occasion. My school was big and sprawling, with four hundred students in my graduating class. I played basketball and soccer for a while and I thought I might be some kind of athlete… But my enthusiasm for team sports fell away once I realized I would never be great. (Once they move you from shortstop to second base, you might want to start making other plans.)”

Today, Burlington High School serves 1,050 students in grades 9 through 12. As a large high school in a relatively high income area, Burlington ranks near the top of MCH’s RPM Buying Power index, which indicates a “Very High” likelihood to respond to general educational offers. The MCH school database includes more than 85 personnel at Burlington High School across all disciplines.

“I started to hang with the popular crowd,” Poehler wrote, “but was never considered the prettiest or most interesting. I tended to blend. In my high school yearbook I was voted third runner-up for ‘Most Casual.’ I never figured out if that meant most casual in dress or in overall manner. In any case, I didn’t come in first. I guess the two ahead of me wanted it less.”

Other notable graduates of Burlington High School include Olympic skaters Peter and Kitty Carruthers, Nobel Prize winning chemist Roderick MacKinnon, hockey pro Jay Pandolfo, NFL running back Steve Strachan, and stand-up comedian Steven Wright.
